Diary of Thomas E. Wilkins, Brooksville; 11th Mississippi Regiment.

August 18, 1864
We went into the fight and I was wounded about 4 o’clock and I layed out on the Battle field about one hour and then I was taken a Prisoner and carryed back to the Hospital and then I got my wond dressed.

August 19, 1864
This morning I feel very sore but I have had my wond dressed and a good drain. We leave the field hospital about 9 o’clock & was sent to the Com. Hospital the distance of 6 miles I stood the trip as well as could be expected.

August 20, 1864
I am at the Com Hospital and my wond is doing as well as could be expected I am getting the best of attention and we are getting plenty to eate. I rested very well last nite and I feel all write. The weather is very pleasant today.

August 21, 1864
I left the Division Hospital about 9 o’clock and was sent to Cty Point and there I was put into a very nice hospital. I feel very well this morning after a good nites rest. The distance is 12 miles from the Division Hospital to City Point

August 23, 1864
This morning I feal very unwell. I got a peace of bone out of my leg but I feel some better Now since I got the bone out of my wond I am resting very well.

August 24, 1864
I rested as well as could be expected last night but I feel very sore this morning. I got another peace of bone out of my wond this morning and I feel some better now.

August 25, 1864
I feal very well this morning after a good nites rest. I left Cty Point about 11 o’clock and was put on a bote and we left about 2 o’clock Pm & we was sent to fourtress Monrow and their we layed up all night and we had a very hard storm. My wond is doing as well as could be expected.

August 26, 1864
At fourtress Monrow hear I changed botes about 9 o’clock AM & I am on a fine bote and I get plenty to eat and plenty of Lemonaide to drink and I feal very much refreshed. The bote layed up all of August the 27 1864 I feal very well Of for Alexandra this morning We got to Alexandra about 5 o’clock PM and then I was sent out to the Hospital in a ambulanch About 2 miles to Sickels Hospital and their I was put on a nice bed for the night Very tired today

August 28, 1864
I feal very well this morning after a good nites rest I have had a good diner? Roast Mutton & Irish potatoes & bread My wond is doing very well I think I will be able to walk on crutches in 20 days

August 29, 1864
I am doing very well this morning and I am able to sit up and write a letter home The weather is very fine on my wond and the nites is very cool and I am getting plenty to eat and I am in fine spirrits This is a fine hospital and I get good attention.

August 30, 1864
I suffered very much last nite with my wond I got another peas of bone out of my leg this morning and I feal some better now I feel like I could take a nap the weather is pleasant.

August 31, 1864
I feal very well this morning after a good nites rest I did write another letter today to Lynchburg we had a good dinner I have got a good appetite I can eat all I can get and I am in fine health & I rest very well at nite

September 1, 1864
I feal very well today and I have set up some today I had a very good diner today my appetite is very good the weather is very pleasant

September 2, 1864
I feel very weak this morning I never rested very well last night but I feal some better now I got a pease of bone out of my leg this morning I feal like I can take a nap today I suffered a great deal this evening I have some fever but I feal in hopes it is a very slite attack My wond is some wors today than it has been for the last 10 days

September 3, 1864
I feal some better today than I did yesterday but I am suffering a great deal but I have not had any fever today My wond looks very well considerin My appetite is very good and I had a very good dinner.

September 4, 1864
I feal some better this butyful Sabath — I feal very thankful to God for his kind care and keeping through my affliction thou I am a long ways from home God is with me I truly hope and will protect me from all harm My wond feals some better but my foot gives me some trouble

September 5, 1864
I have suffered a great deal today I got a peas of my pants and a big peas of cloged blud out of my wond I am in hopes I will get better now in a few days I am suffering a great deal My appetite is very good we had a very fine diner. The weather is fine

September 6, 1864
I feal some better today my wond don’t hurt me as mutch as common but my foot gives me a great deal of pain the weather changed last night and it has been raining ever since and it is very cool today

September 7, 1864
My wond is done better today than it has been but my foot gives me a great deal of pain I rested very well last nite the weather has moderated and it is very fine

September 8, 1864
I have suffered a great deal today I have had the cramps in my foot and leg all day but I feal some better now and I hope I will rest tonite We have had some rain today and the weather is very damp I have had some fever today

September 9, 1864
I have got a very good Dr. to tend to me and he gave me a bottle of milk punch to drink and something to rub on my foot I feal in hopes I will rest well tonite September 10, 1864 My wond don’t get any better and I am suffering Death most with my foot I cannot hardly move it in the bed I have some fever today and I feal weak

September 11, 1864
My leg is swelled very bad today and I am in a great deal of pain I do not sleep but very little theas nites I am in hopes I will get better in a fue days I have some fever I am not able to sit up but very little for the last 4 days My wond broke and run all nite and I went to sleep and rested very well all nite

September 12, 1864
My wond is some better this morning I was moved from Alexandra to Washington Hospital the distance of 8 miles I am now in Lincoln Hospital and I feal very tired but I have had a very nice supper and I hope I will rest well tonite

September 13, 1864
I feal some better today I have walked across the house on crutches and I feal very cheerful today My wond has not as much fever today as it has had for the past fue days I am at Lincoln Hospital and I get very good attention

September 14, 1864
I wrote a letter home the 14 I feal very well today & have been getting up some today and my wond is doing very well today I slept very well last nite

September 15, 1864
My wond is doing very well but my foot has got some fever and it is swelling very bad the weather is fine.

September 16, 1864
I feal very weak today I have been sick at the stommack all day and I have not eaten anything today but I feal in hopes I will be able to be about in a fue days.

September 17, 1864
I have a very high fever in my foot and I have been sick today and have not had any appetite

September 18, 1864
I am in a great deal of pain an my leg is swelled very bad and has got a fever in it

September 19, 1864
My wond gives me a great deal of pain I never closed my eyes in sleep until after 1 o’clock last night and I have been suffering most death all day I got out another peas of bone and I hope I will rest tonight

September 20, 1864
I feal some better today my wond has run a great deal Since I got that bone out I feal in hopes I will get better in a fue days The weather is fine.

September 21, 1864
I feal very well today I had some fever today my wond looks very bad and I cannot sit up any today I am in a very nice hospital and get very good attention

October the 11th & 12th, 1864
My wond is doing very well and I am mending very fast I have a very good appetite to eat and I wrote a letter home today to my Father & Mother and I hope they will get it.

October the 13th & 14th, 1864
My wond is doing very well but I had a chill last night and I have some fever today All quiet

October the 15th & 16th, 1864
I feal some better today but I have not had a chill today I am mending I hope

October the 17th, 1864
Suffered a great deal last night & the Dr got a pease of Bone out of my leg this morning and I feal some better now

October the 18th & 19th, 1864
I am doing as well as could be expected I rested very well last night but I have been sick for the last 4 or 5 days

October the 20th & 21nd, 1864
I am mending very fast and by the kine providence of God I feal in hopes I will be able to go about in a fue days now The weather is pleasant out

October the 22nd, 1864
My wond is doing very well now and I am mending very fast I am getting the very best of attention I get plenty to eat and plenty to drink

October the 23rd, 1864
I feal very well today and I am thankful to God to be able to Stur about this is the Sabbath and I am trying to spend it in the servis of the Lord
